Greek water polo star Eleftheria Plevritou has embarked on an exciting new chapter in her illustrious career, joining Hungary’s FTC-Telekom Waterpolo Women’s Team. In an exclusive interview, she shared insights into her journey, her new team’s ambitions, and her experience transitioning to life in Hungary.
For Eleftheria Plevritou, 2023 marked a year of transformation. After 13 years and an incredible haul of 24 titles with Olympiacos, the decision to leave Greece was not taken lightly. However, the allure of playing abroad and embracing a fresh challenge proved too enticing to resist.
“This is my first year playing abroad, and I’m truly excited to be experiencing such a significant change in my career,” Plevritou revealed. “To be honest, I’ve wanted to take this step for many years. In the past, I received several offers from European teams, but I never followed through.”
The decision to part ways with Olympiacos was an emotional one. Reflecting on the move, Plevritou admitted, “It wasn’t an easy decision to leave Olympiacos after 13 years and 24 titles in Greece and Europe. It was a tough goodbye, but ultimately, this opportunity to play in a different country has been incredible. It’s an exciting new chapter and a meaningful step forward in my career.”
Adjusting to Hungary and a New Style of Play
While the competitive level in Hungary is comparable to that of Greece, Plevritou noted key differences in the playing style. “The style of play is quite different. For me, adapting wasn’t difficult, and I’ve enjoyed the chance to experience a new playing style after so many years in Greece.”
Having visited Hungary on numerous occasions with both her club and the national team, Plevritou was no stranger to the country’s water polo culture. “I’ve always admired how popular water polo is here and how much attention it gets from fans. The atmosphere during events like the 2014 European Championships and the 2017 and 2022 World Championships was incredible. Being part of a culture where water polo is so celebrated feels very special.”
A Dream Start with FTC-Telekom
FTC-Telekom has made an impressive start to the season, and Plevritou is thrilled to be part of their success. “So far, our team is undefeated, which is a fantastic start. We’ve secured key victories in the Champions League, as well as in the Hungarian league and cup. These were crucial goals for us, and we aim to maintain this momentum.”
With the Hungarian Cup Final Four approaching in three weeks, the stakes are high. “Before that, we have important games that we’re focused on winning with strong performances. Every match matters, and I’m committed to contributing my best to help the team succeed,” Plevritou said.
The Champions League also remains a top priority. Acknowledging the formidable competition, Plevritou emphasized the team’s determination to excel. “There are many strong competitors, but we’re determined to prove ourselves and achieve great results this season.”
A Bright Future Ahead
Eleftheria Plevritou’s move to FTC-Telekom has opened new doors, both personally and professionally. Her journey is a testament to the power of embracing change and stepping outside one’s comfort zone. As she continues to adapt and thrive in Hungary, Plevritou is poised to make an even greater impact on the international stage.
For FTC-Telekom, having a player of her caliber brings added strength and experience. With Plevritou in their ranks, the team’s aspirations for domestic and European glory appear within reach.
